Beloved Boy Best-friend

There's always this one boy that you are actually friends with. Never even doubted your relationship being something more than strictly friends. Up until he tells you one day, “I have to tell you something.”

The most dreaded words a girl can hear from her boy best friend. Yeah, sometimes they have to actually tell you something important but 99% of the time it’s them confessing their feelings to you. You play the game of pretending to know what they're going to say and let them confess. You let the casual “oh, I’ve always thought of you like a brother, and I value our friendship so much” slip out. They get embarrassed, you reassure them that it won’t affect you guys, but you get weirded out. Immediately, friendship is over.

The concept of boy best-friends isn’t necessarily one sided. Boys definitely experience the same with girls. The number of times I’ve seen girl best friends get dropped by guys because of a new girlfriend is crazy. Teenage boys and girls can not be strictly best-friends, it’s a fact. At some point in time, one had a crush on the other and either they confessed, or they kept their feelings to themselves.

Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy the company of having a boy best-friend, but not so much the baggage that comes with it. Once you get into a real relationship with a boy while having an actual boy best-friend, you are basically forced to let go of them anyways. Maybe you get lucky if you guys have been best-friends for years and no one has ever doubted your friendship or if your boy best friend is also in a relationship at the same time. But let's be serious, yes, these situations are ideal, but rarely ever happen.

The boy best-friend causes problems that no other can. Even if he is the one to “put you on” with your new boyfriend your loyalty and trust is still doubted. The constant reassuring to the boyfriend or the ultimatum they create, “it’s either me or him.” You know that they have the right to be mad, so you obviously choose him. But once you guys break up, you go back to your boy best-friend, and he welcomes you with open arms. You got to give them some credit, they stick around even if you do leave them.
